What We Do:

We restore/repair/renovate historic windows, you choose which ever one of those words you prefer.

We do free bids, so if you have a problem, we can come take a look, and give you a bid covering your options and associated costs to repair. We understand that sometimes things just need to be repaired in the short term fastest, cheapest way, and sometimes we are lucky enough to have the time and money to do things the right way. Communicate with us about your needs and thoughts and we will communicate back to try to clear up the process for you!

Parts of your windows you might need repaired that we can repair for you:

Sashlocks (missing, want to change, want cleaned, refinished)
Glass (broken, scratched, mismatched)
Glazing (weathered, missing, broken, cracked)
Sash cord or chain (broken, fraying, wrong type, jammed)
Trim (blind stop, parting bead, sash bead – could be broken, mismatched, rotten – we replace with similar, prime if needed)
Sashes (can have rotten or missing mullions, meeting rails, etc., othertimes they are out of square, need to be rebuilt, or built from scratch to start over)
Pulleys (maybe someone painted them shut, maybe you just want to put a shine on em)
Weights (sometimes weights and sashes are not matched well, and your sashes won’t behave properly)
Sashpulls (might need cleaning, replacing, finding a match for a missing one)

Rot- for wood that is rotten, but not in need of total replacement, we rely on the Wood Epox system to give a quality repair that will last for years. Compare to wood putty, bondo, or other insufficient means of repair employed by others.

Paint – We can paint, or strip paint as needed based on your windows. We also encounter windows that are painted or caulked shut, and can make them operable for you again.

Glass – We replace glass with 1/8 double strength glass in many cases. We can also source old (wavy) glass, tempered glass, etc. depending on the requirements of the job and your desires.

If you have wooden windows that you want fixed, whether you are a home owner, landlord, or contractor, please get in touch to see if we can work together to keep Virginia beautiful!

Eco- Friendly Restoration

At Karnage Creations LLC we are always looking for ideas to help make the window restoration process more environmentally friendly – in the short and long terms.

We eschew vinyl as being an inferior product, with a shorter functional lifespan, and a longer decomposition time (does it ever go away?!?!l) than the more traditional wood.

We also keep chemicals in mind. Harsh chemicals are destructive to the environment, our clients, and us! We use alternatives as often as possible.

For instance, we have shifted from using windex or similar products to clean glass to using white vinegar. Just that much less toxicity in the world, and we think, a more streak free product.

When it comes to certain aspects of restoring windows we might not have a choice, but for paint removal from hardware we do. We use no chemicals to strip paint from pulleys, sash locks, sash pulls, screws, old door knobs, miter locks, hinges, and rim locks. Its less harsh on the hardware, ourselves, and the world we have to share and protect for our children. If you have old hardware, even non window related, let us bid cleaning it for you.

We are always open to ideas on how to improve the eco friendly aspects of our job, feel free to get in touch if you share a passion for doing things in a healthier way.

Check Out your Contractor!

You may have heard recent news stories in the Richmond area about folks posing as contractors, doing crappy jobs, and ultimately stealing from their clients, who are often left with a worse mess than they started with.

You can greatly lessen your odds of ending up in such an unfortunate situation by doing a little research on your contractor. You want someone who has taken the time, investment, and has the knowledge and skills to become licensed.

The Virginia Department of Occupational Regulation is the department in charge of, well, regulating contractors. Depending on the type of work you need done and the size of the job you will need a different type of contractor.

Whenever you are seeking bids for work, check your contractor online. It takes just a few minutes and can end up saving you thousands.

http://www.dpor.virginia.gov/licenselookup/

Type in the name of the company, owner, etc. to check the status of their license. Find us by searching for Karnage Creations.

Also, insurance can be an issue. We tell you we are licensed and insured, but you don’t have to take our word for it- look us up, and ask for a certificate of insurance.

These are just some of the most basic things that make a difference in the level of professionalism you can expect from Karnage Creations LLC.  We are here to work with you to help you solve your window problems. And if you don’t choose us, we urge you to choose a qualified, licensed, and insured contractor.

History, Environment, Style, and Your Windows!

Why restore your old windows? The answer to this question brings together subjects that seem initially disparate to many. History, the environment, style, and even your bank account. We appreciate each of these factors that go into making window restoration a wise choice, and are happy to discuss them further with you!

Historic requirements, or out of respect for the history of your house. Their are many great things about old windows – from the wavy glass to unique shape they add immense character to homes. Certain houses, neighborhoods, and tax breaks require you to maintain the historic integrity of your building. Windows are a major aspect of that historic look, they are your house’s eyes. Save yourself time, trouble, and money and make sure you are restoring windows in a historic manner if you live in one of these districts.

Environmentally friendly – keeps vinyl out of the landfills. Even 200 year old wooden windows can be repaired. Vinyl just really can not. Ask my mom, her dog chewed a hole in her vinyl window mullion and the entire sash had to be replaced – no repairs possible. We have never heard of a vinyl repair man yet! But old windows are made out of materials that have been around for centuries, are available still today both new and used, and when finally disposed of do actually decompose. Restoring old windows fits in well with the old Reduce, Reuse, Recycle model of being environmentally responsible.

Worried about energy loss with your heating or cooling? Add storm windows instead of replacing old windows. This is the main argument we hear from proponents of new windows. We do not manufacture or repair storm windows, but we will happily measure for them and install them for you. Certain companies provide higher quality historic storm windows to make sure your windows still shine!

Solar light! When vinyl windows are put into older homes, they place their frame within the old window frame. Which results in a loss of total square inches of glass, and therefore light. It is poor craftsmanship, and results in a visible change to the look of your house. Other aspects, like old wavy glass, antique sash locks and more all add up to create a charm and style that vinyl has yet to replicate.
